Puffin Watching in Iceland: Where and When to See Them
Last updated: February 5, 2026
Atlantic Puffins in Iceland
Iceland is home to about 60 percent of the world Atlantic puffin population. These charming seabirds with colorful beaks are a highlight of summer visits.
Puffins spend most of their lives at sea, only coming to land during breeding season from late April through August.
When to See Puffins
Puffins arrive at Icelandic shores in late April and early May. The best viewing is June and July when chicks are being raised.
By mid August, most puffins have returned to sea and will not be seen until the following spring.
Early morning and evening hours often see more activity as puffins return from fishing.
Best Viewing Locations
Westman Islands
Home to the largest puffin colony in Iceland. Take a ferry from Landeyjahofn for day trips or overnight stays.
Latrabjarg Cliffs
Europe westernmost point with puffins nesting at eye level. Accessible by car in the Westfjords.
Dyrholaey
Near Vik on the South Coast. Puffins nest on cliffs with dramatic views of black sand beaches.
Borgarfjordur Eystri
East Iceland location with viewing platforms very close to nesting birds.
Boat Tours
Boat tours from Reykjavik and Husavik take you to offshore islands where puffins nest in large numbers.
Tours typically last 1 to 2 hours and often combine puffin viewing with whale watching.
Book in advance during peak season as popular tours fill up.
Photography Tips
Bring a telephoto lens of at least 200mm. Puffins are small and often at some distance.
At Latrabjarg, you can get surprisingly close. Be patient and let birds approach you.
Overcast days are good for photography as harsh shadows are reduced.
Conservation
Puffin populations have declined in recent years due to changing ocean conditions affecting their food supply.
Observe from distance at most locations. Never approach nests or chase birds for photos.
Support conservation efforts by visiting responsibly and choosing eco friendly tour operators.
