Ring Road Route Guide: Planning Your Drive

Last updated: February 5, 2026

Route 1 Overview

The Ring Road, Route 1, circles Iceland for approximately 1332 kilometers. It connects most of the country major attractions and passes through varied landscapes.

Most travelers complete the circuit in 7 to 10 days, though two weeks allows a more relaxed pace.

Driving Direction

Most travelers drive counterclockwise, heading south from Reykjavik first. This saves the dramatic South Coast waterfalls for early in the trip when enthusiasm is high.

Clockwise works equally well if you prefer building toward South Coast highlights.

Regional Highlights

South Coast

Waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, black sand beaches at Vik, and the glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon.

East Fjords

Winding coastal roads with tiny fishing villages. Less touristed and wonderfully peaceful.

North Iceland

Whale watching in Husavik, Myvatn geothermal area, and powerful Godafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls.

West Iceland

Snaefellsnes Peninsula makes an excellent addition with its own glacier, volcanic craters, and coastal scenery.

Accommodation Zones

Book accommodation in these towns for convenient stopping points around the ring.

Vik or Hofn on South Coast. Egilsstadir in the East. Akureyri or Husavik in the North. Borgarnes or Stykkisholmur in the West.

Fuel Stops

N1 and Olis stations are most common. Distances between stations can reach 100 kilometers in remote areas.

Fill up in every town, especially before crossing the east.

Road Conditions

The Ring Road is paved its entire length. However, some connecting roads to attractions are gravel.

Winter driving on the Ring Road is possible but challenging. Storm closures are common. Check road.is constantly.

Best Time to Drive

June through August offers best weather and longest days. All facilities are open.

May and September have fewer tourists with still reasonable conditions.

Winter driving is only for experienced travelers with proper vehicles.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating time needed. Allow at least 7 full days.

Skipping the East Fjords. They are beautiful and worth the extra time.

Not booking ahead in summer. Accommodation fills months in advance.

Driving too fast on gravel. Slow down to avoid damage and accidents.
