About This Route
The Ring Road, officially known as Route 1, is Iceland's main national road that runs around the island, connecting most of the inhabited parts of the country. Completed in 1974, this iconic route offers access to an incredible variety of landscapes - from glaciers and volcanoes to fjords and fishing villages.
The road is almost entirely paved and suitable for 2WD vehicles in summer, though a 4WD provides more flexibility for side trips. Winter driving requires more preparation and experience with icy roads.
Whether you have a week or two weeks, the Ring Road provides the perfect framework for an Icelandic adventure. While it's technically possible to drive the route in a few days, we recommend at least 7 days to enjoy the journey without rushing.
