About This Tool
Our Northern Lights Best Spots tool helps you find the perfect aurora viewing location in Iceland. Unlike static blog posts that simply list locations, this interactive guide lets you filter and compare 15 expert-curated spots across multiple dimensions that matter for a successful aurora experience.
What Makes This Tool Different
Every viewing spot includes Bortle dark sky ratings (the international scale for measuring light pollution), average cloud cover percentages by month, accessibility information, winter road access status, and detailed photography guidance including foreground composition elements and camera settings.
How to Use This Tool
Start on the Best Spots tab to browse all locations. Use the filters to narrow by region, difficulty, driving distance, or viewing month. Switch to the Comparetab to view spots side-by-side in a comparison table. The Calendar tab shows month-by-month aurora conditions, darkness hours, and which spots are best each month. Photographers should check the Photography tab for camera settings and the best foreground opportunities. The Guide & FAQ tab covers everything from the Kp index to practical tips from aurora experts.
Northern Lights Season in Iceland
The Northern Lights are visible in Iceland from September through March, with October and February considered the optimal months. Iceland's high latitude (64-66°N) means aurora is visible at lower Kp levels than most other destinations. Even Kp 2 can produce visible displays in Iceland's darkest locations like the Westfjords (Bortle Class 1) and Jökulsárlón (Bortle Class 2).
