ICE-SAR (Landsbjörg) is Iceland's volunteer search and rescue organization with over 10,000 members in 100+ teams across the country. They respond to missing persons, glacier incidents, beach drownings, car accidents, and sea rescues — entirely on a volunteer basis.
Always call 112 — dispatchers at the Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC Iceland) mobilize the appropriate ICE-SAR teams. You do not call ICE-SAR directly in an emergency. Teams use 4x4s, snowmobiles, helicopters, and boats.

The Icelandic Coast Guard operates the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Iceland), two rescue helicopters, and patrol vessels. They respond to maritime emergencies, cliff rescues, and coastal incidents.
Coast Guard helicopters are stationed in Reykjavik and Akureyri and are also used for land rescues in remote areas. Always call 112 — dispatchers coordinate with the Coast Guard automatically.
