The practical guide to doing laundry on an Iceland Ring Road trip. Laundromats, campsite machines, Ring Road stops, packing strategy and costs — all in one place.
Iceland has very few self-service laundromats outside Reykjavik. On the Ring Road, campsite washing machines are your main option. Plan your stops accordingly or pack for 5–6 days (see Ring Road Plan section below).

The Iceland Ring Road takes 7–12 days. Here is a practical laundry plan that works for campers and hotel travellers alike.
Pack for 5–6 days maximum. Merino wool means you wear items 2–3× before washing. You need fewer clothes than you think.
Plan exactly 2 Ring Road laundry stops: one around Höfn (Days 4–5) and one in Akureyri (Days 7–8). That covers a 10-day trip.
Hand wash socks and underwear every 2 nights. Iceland accommodations dry clothes fast — geothermal heating is your ally.
Laundromat Café or Þvottahús (self-service)
Do a full load before departing — start the Ring Road with clean clothes
Selfoss or Vík Campsite laundry
If camping, use campsite machines. Hotels: ask about guest machine
Höfn Campsite (2 machines)
Key stop in glacier country — 5 days of clothes by now. Do a full wash.
Egilsstaðir Campsite (2 machines)
East Iceland is quiet — rarely any queue. Large Bonus supermarket for detergent.
Akureyri Campsite (3 machines — best on Ring Road)
Best facilities outside Reykjavik. Take a rest day — visit the pool (free hot chocolate). Do a thorough wash and dry.
Vogar Campsite (1 machine)
Single machine — optional stop. Better to wait for Akureyri if timing allows.
Laundromat Café or hotel laundry before flight
Final wash before flying home. Allow 3 hours for self-service. Book hotel laundry 24h ahead.
A complete overview of all laundry options, what they cost, and how long you will wait.
| Option | Cost (per load) | Wait Time | Quality | Where Available |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-service laundromat | 1,200–1,900 ISK/load | 2–3 hours | Excellent | Reykjavik only |
| Campsite machine | 1,200–1,600 ISK/load | 2–3 hours | Good | Major campsites on Ring Road |
| Hotel laundry service | 1,500–3,000 ISK/load | 24–48 hours | Excellent | Most hotels (Reykjavik and towns) |
| Guesthouse / Airbnb machine | 0–800 ISK/load | 2–3 hrs + dry overnight | Excellent | Iceland-wide (most Airbnbs free) |
| Hand washing | Free | Overnight dry | OK for small items | Anywhere |
| Dry cleaning | 3,000–8,000 ISK/item | 1–3 days | Professional | Reykjavik only |
Buy 2–3 quality merino wool base layers before your trip. They cost €30–80 each but you can wear them 3–4 days, they don't smell, and they dry overnight. Transforms your packing strategy.
Coin-op machines only accept ISK coins, not cards. Withdraw 5,000 ISK cash in Reykjavik and keep 2,000 ISK specifically as laundry coins — 100 ISK and 200 ISK coins are what you need.
Everything travellers ask about doing laundry during an Iceland trip, from laundromats to hand washing to packing strategy.
Iceland has very few self-service laundromats compared to most countries — this surprises many travellers. In Reykjavik, the main options are The Laundromat Café (Austurstræti 9) and Þvottahús Reykjavíkur (Barónsstígur 3). Outside Reykjavik, self-service laundromats are extremely rare or non-existent. The main laundry option on the Ring Road is campsite washing machines, which most major campsites have (1–3 machines). Budget travellers should plan their Ring Road itinerary around campsite laundry stops.
Use the Ring Road Plan section to map your 2 laundry stops and check off your packing list in the Costs section.
