Iceland's most commonly seen whale — fast, curious, and often seen rolling at the surface. Minke whales are baleen feeders who lunge through schools of fish near the surface. They're shy at first but occasionally approach boats.

The crowd favourite. Humpbacks are enormously acrobatic — they breach fully clear of the water, tail-slap the surface, and wave their massive pectoral fins. Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see them. Their 2m-wide tail flukes are lifted when beginning a deep dive.

The largest animal ever to exist on Earth. Blue whales visit Icelandic waters in summer to feed on vast swarms of krill. Seeing one is extraordinary — they make every other whale look small. The blow can reach 12 metres high. Sightings are uncommon but unforgettable.

Iceland sees spectacular Orca (Killer Whale) action in winter, when pods follow massive herring schools into the Snæfellsnes fjords. The orcas use a "carousel feeding" technique — they herd herring into tight balls with bursts of speed, then stun them with tail slaps. Watching a pack hunt is extraordinary.

Best time: June–September (offshore)

The deep-diving titan. Sperm whales dive to 1,000m+ to hunt giant squid, holding their breath for up to 90 minutes. Inshore sightings near Iceland are uncommon, but they do occur offshore. The unmistakable blow angles 45 degrees forward-left — the only whale with this distinctive feature.

White-beaked Dolphin

Length: 2.5–3.1 metres

Weight: 180–350 kg

Best time: Year-round, peak April–October

The most frequently seen dolphin in Icelandic waters. White-beaked dolphins are playful, fast, and love bow-riding whale watching boats. They travel in groups of 5–50, leaping and weaving around vessels. A guaranteed highlight of any tour.

Weight: 50–70 kg

Best time: Year-round

The smallest cetacean found in Icelandic waters, the Harbour Porpoise is present year-round. They're shy and fast, and rarely approach boats — but their small dorsal fin breaking the surface is a common sight near harbour mouths and bays. Often spotted in calm conditions.

A deep-diving beaked whale occasionally seen in deeper waters off Iceland. Northern Bottlenose Whales are unique in being genuinely curious about vessels — they often approach and circle boats, making them a special sight when encountered. Very rarely seen on standard nearshore tours.
